The number of products available for a new baby can be overwhelming to parents. Babies don't necessarily need every item on the market, but there are some things parents of a new baby cannot do without. Other items may not be necessary, but make life with a newborn easier. Parenthood.com recommends focusing on safety and planning ahead when preparing for a new baby, so that all essential gear has been purchased before the baby arrives.

Clothes

It may seem obvious, but a new baby will need clothing that fits and is appropriate for the season. One-piece outfits work well in the summer. A winter baby will require hats, socks and mittens. Pajamas are important so the baby can sleep comfortably. Clothes should be made from soft fabrics and without tags or other uncomfortable distractions. Snaps under a baby's bottom will make it easier to change his diaper.

Diapers

A new baby cannot do without diapers. Both disposable and cloth diapers are available, and the parents' preference will determine which are best for their new baby. Baby wipes should also be on hand to clean up messes when changing diapers. They are generally hypoallergenic and easy on a new baby's delicate skin. Have some diaper rash cream to help prevent the discomfort of a rash.

Car Seat

Most hospitals will not allow parents to take their new baby home without a properly installed car seat. Infant carriers are available anywhere baby products are sold, and range in price depending on features. Car seats for newborns should be rear-facing when in the car. Those that have removable covers can be cleaned easily, and those with handles that move forward and back make them easy to carry and maneuver in and out of the car.

Furniture

A new baby will need a place to sleep, so a crib or bassinet is vital. Bassinets are ideal for new babies, because they can be moved around easily and generally fit well in the parents' bedroom. However, they are only recommended for the first few months, so a crib will be needed after that point. A changing table provides a convenient location to change the baby's diaper where all supplies are close by.

Baby Bathtub

A baby bathtub can be placed in the sink or regular tub and allows a baby to stay propped up during her bath. This makes it easier for parents to clean her without having to lay her in the hard sink or bathtub. Mild soap and small washcloths are additional bath products that a new baby will need.
