A Hairstyles For Long Hair How-To

Everyone has good hair days and not-so-good hair days. Whether you want to vary your hairstyle, or aren't sure how to style your hair once it grows out, you have options for styling your long hair at home.

Step 1

Develop a haircare regimen that includes washing, conditioning and regular haircuts or trims. Choose hair products that are appropriate to your hair type (i.e. avoid products with a high alcohol content if you have dry hair). Getting regular haircuts or trims remove any dead hair strands that inhibit healthy hair from growing.

Step 2

Use a flat iron for a sleek, low maintenance look. Wash and condition hair. Use a brush to brush through hair while blow drying. Spray hair with a heat protectant spray. Part hair into sections. Place a section of hair between the iron clamps and slide down to the ends. Repeat this process in the remaining sections.

Step 3

Use a curling iron to create a wavy or curly style. Wash and condition hair. Use a brush to brush through hair while blow drying. Spray hair with a heat protectant spray. Part hair into sections. Use the curling iron to curl hair. Place the top section (closest to the scalp) of a 2 to 3 inch section of hair between the clamps of the curling iron. Run the curling iron down to the end of the hair. Hold the tip of the curling iron with the other hand. Roll the remaining hair around the curling iron. Hold for 3 to 5 seconds and release. Repeat the process, working through the remaining sections of the hair.

Step 4

Create a ponytail for low-key occasions. Start with clean dry hair. Brush hair up into a ponytail. Use a soft ponytail holder (versus a rubber band) to prevent breakage. Apply a gel to the edges of your hair and brush upward or inward towards the ponytail to hold the style. Use a flat iron or curling iron to add curls or waves to the ponytail.
