Aldara Cream, the brand name of the medication imiquimod topical, is a prescription immune response modifier medication. It works by stimulating the immune system to release chemicals called cytokines, which help to fight viruses and destroy cancer cells, according to the New Zealand Dermatological Society. Individuals should always discuss their questions or concerns about using Aldara Cream with a doctor.

Actinic Keratoses

Actinic keratosis is a scaly, flat growth that appears on areas of the skin exposed to direct sunlight. Although these growths can be any shape an range in size, they are usually skin-colored, yellowish-black or reddish-brown in color. If these growths are not treated, 10 to 15 percent may develop into a form of skin cancer, according to the Aldara website. Aldara Cream is indicated for the treatment of typical, nonhypertrophic, nonhyperkeratotic actinic keratoses on the face or scalp in immunocompetent adults, according to the Aldara Cream prescribing information. Patients with a compromised immune system should explore other treatment options with a doctor.

Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma

Superficial basal cell carcinoma is a form of skin cancer that may be treatable if caught early. Patients should also be immunocompetent, and should have their tumor confirmed with a biopsy before using the product, according to the Aldara Cream prescribing information. Aldara Cream should also only be used when the size of the tumor is less than 2 cm in diameter and is located on the neck, trunk or extremities, excluding the hands and feet. Patients with superficial BCCs should also only use this medication when surgical methods are not appropriate. Careful monitoring and follow-up care from a doctor is required.

Genital Warts

Aldara Cream may also treat genital or perianal warts that occur outside of the body in individuals 12 years old or older. Patients should note that Aldara Cram does not cure genital or perianal warts, however. It also may not keep them from spreading the condition to others through oral, vaginal or anal sex, warns Drugs.com. Those using Aldara Cream for genital warts also should avoid sexual activity while the medication is on the skin.
