Among the many preparations you can make for a new baby, what you bring with you to the hospital is important. By packing your baby bag, preparing your admission documents and keeping a checklist of everything you and your spouse will need during your stay, you can make the time you spend before and after your baby's birth pass smoothly and comfortably. Keep these supplies together in a convenient location so that you can grab them quickly when you leave for the hospital.

Hospital Registration

To speed time during check-in, complete your registration forms and insurance information forms in advance. If the hospital requires other forms, consult your doctor to learn what they are and have them completed and on hand as well. Keep these forms together, and store them with your other hospital supplies, such as the baby bag and supplies for both parents.

Baby Supplies

Although much of what you bring for the baby won't be necessary until it's time to leave, having it readily available beforehand will mean one less source of stress for you when the time comes. You should have an outfit suitably sized for a newborn, which you can dress the baby in before leaving the hospital. This should include clothing such as a "onesie" or pullover that covers the baby's body, arms and legs. Also include socks and booties and a baby cap if the hospital does not provide one. Choose and install an infant-friendly car seat ahead of the birth as well, to ensure a safe and secure first ride home for your child.

For the Mom

Pack comfortable and loose clothing to wear during your stay and on the trip home. Include a nursing bra and a nightgown or long, comfortable shirt to wear in place of hospital robes. Pack comfortable slippers and socks, and personal hygiene items such as your toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant. If you wear glasses or contacts, pack a spare pair of glasses in case you forget your main pair in all of the excitement.

For the Dad or Birth Coach

Keep a list of all friends and family members you wish to call while in the hospital. Also pack a spare charger for your mobile phone, along with any other electronics you may be bringing. Pack a camera for videos or pictures if you plan on documenting the birth. Also bring a watch with which to help the mother measure her contractions.
