Fun Things to Do in NYC in Winter

Though the winter months can be snowy and cold in New York City, it is a perfect time of year to travel to the city. Across New York City you will find a number of fun and healthy activities for couples or families to partake in when visiting this bustling metropolis.

Ice Skating

When visiting New York City in the winter one of the most popular winter activities is ice skating. Take a spin on skates around Rockefeller Center, the most famous ice skating rink in New York City. Bryant Park, home of the public library, also has an outdoor rink. Indoor rinks exist around Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan at locations such as Chelsea Piers.

Midtown

During the winter months, especially December and January, the touristy Midtown area is decked out in Christmas lights and decorations. Spend an evening taking a walk past the New York Public Library, Grand Central Terminal, Steinway Hall and Saint Thomas Church.

Spa

Pamper yourself on a cold winter afternoon at one of New York's many spas. Get a facial or massage before hitting the crisp winter air outside. New York Spa Castle, Eden Day Spa and Oasis on Park Day Spa are just a few options in downtown New York City.

Sledding

There's only a few months out of the year when you can pull out the sled and take it down some hills. Within the city limits there are a number of tall hills such as Cedar Hill and Pilgrim Hill in Central Park or Riverside Park. You can also take a horse carriage ride through Central Park as well. Though these tours are offered all year, only during winter can you ride over the snow-covered streets of New York City.

Museums

Throughout winter a number of New York's most popular museums have exhibits to fit the weather or holiday season. Take an afternoon walk through such attractions as the New York Aquarium or Museum of Modern Art. The New York Hall of Science has an exhibit annually that puts you in the middle of a giant snow globe.
