If you are preparing to take your baby on an airplane for the first time, it can be an intimidating proposition. Aside from normal concerns about the baby getting sick or injured, you also worry about figuring out a way to make sure your baby doesn't scream and cry the whole time--and the stares and glares that will come from other passengers if he does. But some tricks and tips will increase the odds your baby will sleep through the flight.

Step 1

Keep your baby awake prior to the flight. By keeping him awake, he'll be nice and tired when it's time to depart. A well-rested baby is going to want to play the whole time--in the aisles or on your neighbor's lap, for instance--and you're going to find yourself grappling to keep him in your lap.

Step 2

Bring plenty of bottles. Assuming your baby drinks them, a nice full bottle can be your best friend when flying with a baby. It will keep her content and quiet for long stretches at a time. If your baby likes warm bottles, ask a flight attendant to heat it for you to better increase the odds she'll sleep.

Step 3

Avoid putting your baby in the aisle seat. Try to get the window seat for him, or for you if he's sitting on your lap. The aisle is a thoroughfare during the bulk of many flights, with attendants pushing drink trays and making the rounds, and passengers taking bathroom trips. By keeping him away from all of this noise and motion, you'll increase your odds of getting him to go to sleep.

Step 4

Wait until you get onto the plane to feed your baby, if possible. Most babies sleep better on a full stomach.

Things You'll Need

  • Two bottles
  • Toys
  • Pacifier
  • Baby blanket
