Signs of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, more commonly referred to as MS, is a disease that affects the central nervous system. The nerves between the brain and the rest of the body do not communicate normally, producing a number of symptoms that can range in intensity over the course of a person's life. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke (NINDS), most people who have MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. Some people with MS experience seizures, hearing loss and problems with breathing, but these are rare signs of the disease. The most common signs of multiple sclerosis affect the patient's eyes, limbs and energy level.

Numbness

The National MS Society reports that numbness is an early sign of multiple sclerosis. Numbness may occur intermittently in the face, arms, legs or other areas of the body.

Vision Problems

People who have MS often report having problems with their vision. Blurry vision, seeing double and color distortion may be eye-related symptoms of MS.

Mobility Issues

Limited mobility is a common sign of MS, though this symptom may develop well after a person has been diagnosed with the disease. Mobility issues can include problems with balance, an impaired gait or pain that hampers walking normally.

Emotional Symptoms

MS produces emotional symptoms as well as physical signs. The National MS Society describes some of the emotional issues faced by people affected by MS, including increased irritability, depression and mood swings.

Fatigue

In conjunction with other factors, extreme fatigue may lead to a diagnosis of MS. The lethargy can be severe enough that a person is not able to participate in everyday activities.

Bladder and Bowel Symptoms

The impaired nerve signals between the brain and the body cause bladder and bowel issues in up to 80 percent of people with MS, according to the National MS Society. Constipation is a common complaint. Frequent urination and intermittent incontinence may also be symptoms of the disease.
