Cefprozil is the generic version of Cefzil, an antibiotic used for bacterial infections affecting the throat, middle ear, and skin and soft tissue. Cefprozil is available by prescription only and comes as either tablets or oral suspension. According to Drugs.com, cefprozil should not be taken by individuals allergic to penicillin products as it may produce the same allergy-type symptoms.
Cephalosporin Antibiotic
According to RxList.com, cefprozil is a broad-spectrum and semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic. A broad-spectrum antibiotic works on more than just one specific disease or bacteria. They are useful for treating infections caused by pneumococci, meningococci and streptococcus bacteria. Tablets contain 250 to 500 mg of cefprozil and the oral suspension has 125 to 250 mg per 5 mL.
Cefprozil Tablets Inactive Ingredients
There is only one active ingredient in the tablet form of Cefprozil. The remaining ingredients are used as tableting and disintegrating agents as well as coloring. Tableting agents such as cellulose, magnesium stearate, simethicone and polyethylene glycol are used as binders, preservative and lubrication. For coloring of the 250 mg tablets FD&C Yellow No. 6 is added during the mixing process. The 500 mg tablets remain white.
Cefprozil Oral Suspension Inactive Ingredients
Inactive ingredients in the oral suspension are used for delivery, as preservatives, and to add flavor and coloring. Aspartame is used as a sweetener. Cellulose is used as a thickening agent. Other ingredients include citric acid, colloidal silicone dioxide, FD&C Red No. 3, glycine, polysorbate 80, simethicone, sodium benzoate, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, sodium chloride and sucrose.
