Boston is one of the most densely populated cities in North America and one of the most historic cities in the United States. All summer you can find the citizens of Boston out enjoying the numerous opportunities for athleticism and recreation. From group activities to solo or duo workouts, you can find endless summer activities in Boston.

In-line Skating

The In-line Club of Boston sponsors three weekly group skates. Beginners can meet at 9 a.m. every Sunday to work on their skills. Group skates along city streets begin at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday for more experienced skaters, and Tuesday nights the club sponsors skates for more experienced skaters. Check with the club for meeting locations and skating regulations.

Canoe Rides

Each summer, the Boston Natural Area Network offers canoe trips along several waterways in the Boston area. Get out and paddle around the city on the Neponset River, Mother Brook and the Charles River. Reservations are required. Rides are free.

Farmers Markets

Summer is the best time in Boston to eat fresh, healthy produce directly from farms. Throughout the city during the summer you can find farmers markets to maintain healthy eating in the hot months. The city of Boston lists the locations and times of daily markets.

Mountain Biking in Stony Brook

On the southern end of the city you will find Stony Brook Reservation, an oasis from the city. Ten miles of mountain biking trails take you to the highest spot in the city limits. While you ride you will be surrounded by hundreds of acres of wetlands and forest, ponds and rocky hills. Stony Brook is accessible by car or public transportation.

Walk the Freedom Trail

Summer is the best time to take in Boston's history on foot. The Freedom Trail connects numerous landmarks of the American Revolution on restored, red brick streets. The Boston National Historic Park is operated by the National Park Service. You can take in all or some of the historic spots on the trail, from Paul Revere's House to the USS Constitution.

Dance in the Moonlight

The Boston Tango Festival offers free dancing at night during a weeklong summer festival. Take a class beforehand or, if you are more experienced, show off your skills with other tango lovers. The festival, sponsored by the Boston Tango Society, is free.

Boston Common and the Emerald Necklace

The Boston Common is a favorite destination all year for residents but in summer it becomes a place to walk, jog or cycle. The Boston Common links to the rest of the "Emerald Necklace," a series of parks that ring the city. The connected paths of the necklace are perfect for long urban strolls or rides. In the summer the Frog Pond in Boston Common becomes a wading pool popular with children, especially when the spray fountain kicks in on a hot day.
