You don't need to laboriously record in a notebook the information on the packages of all the food you eat or guess how many calories were in that burger you picked up at the drive-thru. Online websites and tools, often available for free, can accurately record your food consumption and monitor your progress.

Step 1

Join an online calorie counting website, such as FitDay or Daily Plate, taking advantage of its database of processed and unprocessed foods. Input the food and serving size to track your calorie consumption, as well as fitness activities by type and duration. Set goals for yourself and monitor your calorie expenditure versus consumption.

Step 2

Consult the websites of individual fast-food companies or the combined listing on the Washington Post's fast-food calorie counter, with information on McDonald's, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A and other companies. Learn which menu items contain hefty calorie loads, as well as grams of fat and sodium counts.

Step 3

Calculate the calories in your homemade meals using an online recipe calculator, also called a nutritional breakdown calculator. Input your recipe and the number of portions served to learn how many calories you're eating.

Step 4

Join the online weight-loss community if you are using a dieting plan. Read the calorie and nutritional counts for your pre-packaged diet plan foods and employ tools to help keep track of calories.

Tips and Warnings

  • Read labels to learn portion sizes so you can input the correct information for your online food tracker. Purchase a food scale and use it to weigh meats, vegetables and breads.
