The length of your toddler's foot is the basis for determining his shoe size. Once you know the length of your child's foot, you can determine his shoe size based on a specific shoe-sizing system. For example, manufacturers in the United States and Canada use a scale for children's shoe sizes that ranges from size 1 to size 13. Manufacturers commonly use their own variations to standard sizing shoe sizing systems, so you should be sure to try the shoes on your toddler's feet before you buy them.
Step 1
Place a pair of everyday socks on your toddler's feet. This should provide a foot measurement with adequate space between your child's feet and the shoe.
Step 2
Straighten your child's feet as much as possible. Place the foot against a flat surface such as the floor.
Step 3
Place a ruler or tape measure next to your child's foot. Measure the entire length of your child's foot in inches from the edge of the heel to the tip of the big toe. Record this measurement.
Step 4
Repeat steps one through three with the other foot. Use the larger of these two measurements to calculate your child's shoe size.
Step 5
Compute your child's shoe size with the following formula: S = (3 x L) - 9.5. S is your child's raw shoe size, and L is the length of your child's foot. Round your child's shoe size up to the next-largest half size to find your child's commercial shoe size.
For example, assume that your child's largest foot is 6.25 inches in length. Your child's raw shoe size is (3 x 6.25) -- 9.5 = 9.25. Your child therefore has a commercial shoe size of 9.5.
