Thinning or the complete loss of your eyelashes can result from factors both in and out of your control. Common causes of thinning eyelashes include certain cosmetics and the method you use to remove them, medical conditions, drug interactions and the aging process. In addition to steps you can take on your own to avoid eyelash thinning and loss, a thorough physical exam and consultation with your doctor may reveal additional options for helping your eyelashes grow.

Home Treatment

Step 1

Replace cosmetics and makeup removers, especially those you use around your eyes, with hypoallergenic products or products designed for sensitive skin. According to EyeSplendor.com, cosmetic allergies are the most common factor contributing to thin eyelashes.

Step 2

Purchase mascara that is not waterproof, as this type of mascara is thick and difficult to remove. Rubbing and tugging at your eyelashes can cause some to fall out.

Step 3

Remove eye makeup before going to sleep to avoid eyelashes from weighing down and falling out. Be gentle with eye makeup removers to avoid pulling eyelashes out as you remove makeup.

Step 4

Purchase an over-the-counter eyelash growth product. the Eyelash Growth Center website recommends choosing products that list sodium hyaluronate and bio-peptides as ingredients. Sodium hyaluronate, also called hyaluronic acid, is a moisturizing ingredient, while bio-peptides work to strengthen lashes, making them less susceptible to breakage.

Step 5

Stop rubbing your eyes, especially when you are wearing mascara. Excessive rubbing can cause eyelashes to fall out, as well as prevent new eyelashes from growing.

Medical Options

Step 1

Get a medical check-up to see if you have a thyroid condition or if a mite called demodex folliculorum is present in your eyelash follicles.

Step 2

Consult with your doctor about medications you currently take and ask if alternative soluntions exist. Medications such as acitretin, soriatane and neotigason, usually prescribed for skin conditions, can have side effects that include thinning eyelashes.

Step 3

Ask for a prescription for the FDA-approved eyelash growth medication marketed under the brand name Latisse. Clinical trials prove that Bimatoprost, the active ingredient in this product, is effective in helping eyelashes grow.

Tips and Warnings

  • Bimatoprost is a medication originally used to treat an eye condition called glaucoma. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved it for use as an eyelash growth medication in 2009, after clinical trials proved its effectiveness in promoting eyelash growth.
  • Be very careful when using over-the-counter or prescription medications designed to promote eyelash growth. Follow the package directions or your doctor's instructions closely to avoid injuring your eyes.
