If you are parents who are expecting your first child or even seasoned parents, sometimes the anticipation of knowing the sex of your first baby can be overwhelming. Knowing the sex of the baby can help with decorating the nursery, choosing names or even for medical-related issues. Several options are available for you to find out the baby's gender, both at home or at a medical office.
Ultrasound
Step 1
Schedule an appointment with your doctor's office during your second trimester of pregnancy. An ultrasound is generally scheduled between 14 to 18 weeks of gestation.
Step 2
Wear loose clothing to the procedure. Loose clothing allows you to reveal your stomach easily during the procedure. Consume two to three glasses of water an hour before the ultrasound is done. According to Medline Plus, a full bladder is better for capturing good pictures.
Step 3
Lie on the table in the room and reveal your abdominal region. Generally, lifting your shirt and pulling your pants down slightly will reveal the abdomen area where the ultrasound technician will use the probe.
Step 4
Tell the ultrasound technician that you would like to know the gender of your baby. The ultrasound technician will start by draping your abdominal region to prevent the conductive gel from getting onto your clothes.
Step 5
Lie still during the procedure. The ultrasound technician may ask that you move during the procedure to capture better images while he slides the probe across your abdomen. If the technician is able to view the gender of the baby, he will inform you whether the baby is a boy or a girl.
Testing at Home
Step 1
Open the test kit by breaking the adhesive seal and remove the contents of the box. You should have directions, urine collection cup, syringe and test vessel.
Step 2
Collect a urine sample in the cup provided using the first urine of the morning. The first morning urine contains the most concentration of human chorionic gonadotrophin, or hCG, the pregnancy hormone.
Step 3
Fill the syringe with urine until the syringe is full by holding the base of the syringe with one hand, while pulling up the plunger with your other hand.
Step 4
Remove the seal or sticker from the top of the test vessel. Insert the tip of the syringe into the hole and press down on the plunger until the syringe is empty.
Step 5
Hold the test vessel upright by using your thumb and fingers and forming a C-shape around the vessel. Rotate your wrist in a circular motion and swirl the urine and powder at the bottom of the vessel together for 10 seconds.
Step 6
Set the test vessel of a flat white surface and let sit for 10 minutes. Check the vessel for results. If the color is orange or yellow-orange, the test predicts a girl. A green to brown-green color signifies it's a boy, according to the test predictions.
