Supplements that contain vitamins, minerals or herbs, may boost memory, but the FDA does not oversee the production and sale of most dietary supplements, so there is no guarantee of effectiveness. See your doctor to rule out a medical disorder if you find it difficult to complete familiar tasks, if you mix up your words or if you get lost.

Vitamin B12

According to the Mayo Clinic, a deficiency in vitamin B12 may cause memory loss. This essential nutrient protects your nerve cells and your red blood cells. If you're deficient in vitamin B12, you may have elevated homocysteine levels, which increases your risk of developing memory-related disorders, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements. Increasing your intake of Vitamin B12 may normalize homocysteine levels, boosting your memory, but only if you're deficient in the vitamin. Consult your doctor to determine whether you're suffering from a vitamin B12 deficiency.

Vitamins C and E

A report from the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health discusses the potential benefit of taking vitamins C and E to combat oxidizing effects in the brain. Studies indicate that patients who take these supplements may have a lower incidence of developing Alzheimer's dementia symptoms. Results are promising, but clinical tests are necessary to confirm benefits. Do not exceed the recommended dosage on the vitamin package, unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Herbal Supplements

Herbs are a form of natural medicine, which advocates an alternative to the use of conventional drugs. Ginkgo biloba contains plant-based antioxidants that may be beneficial in boosting memory, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Additional herbal supplements that may boost memory include ginseng, green tea and rosemary, although clinical studies confirming these benefits are lacking. Use herbal supplement to combat memory loss under the supervision of a doctor of naturopathy.
