Decorating your toddler's room can be a fun experience that you can share with your child. Many times toddlers have a certain theme they are fond of, such as fish, reptiles, rainbows or flowers. It may also be that your child enjoys a certain texture such as soft fabric or carpet. Safety features should be included in your design considerations so you can avoid loose bookshelves or uncovered electrical plugs.

Step 1

Choose a color theme for your toddler's room. Since walls are what take up most of the visual space in a room, it is important to choose a color that is soothing for your child, so she can feel rested and have an easier time relaxing and falling asleep, but that is also light for when she is playing during the day. Accent colors can be introduced through artwork on the wall, pillows and the fabric of the bedspread.

Step 2

Pick out furniture pieces that double as storage space to help you keep the room uncluttered from toys or other items that can become a hazard, recommends the website Let's Renovate. Buy a bed that has drawers on the base, benches that have storage space under the seat and small shelves with built-in cabinets. Make sure all the storage places are at a height that your child can reach so he can help you pick up and also reach his toys. Keeping your child's room clean and tidy will teach him about being organized and will also prevent dust from building up and causing potential allergic reactions.

Step 3

Provide safe lighting for your toddler's room. Make sure all light bulbs are out of reach to prevent your child from touching them and burning her hand. Choosing to install a skylight or big windows that provide natural light will be beneficial for your child, as natural light stimulates children to be more attentive and learn more, according to the website Preschool Rock.

Step 4

Add elements related to your child's preferred theme through wall art, stuffed animals, a rug and lampshades. You can even create your own lampshade by cutting shapes into an old lampshade that will project images to the walls when the light is turned on. Make sure to incorporate enough of these elements into the room without overwhelming it. Have your child help you choose items that work.

Tips and Warnings

  • Get your child involved in the process so he can feel happy about the way the room turns out. This way, he is more likely to want to spend time there and will feel comfortable with the design.
  • Remove anything from the room that may become a choking hazard, such as figurines and other small decorations.

Things You'll Need

  • Color theme
  • Furniture with storage
