Magnesium is responsible for many functions of the body, and, because it is most readily available in unprocessed foods, many Americans do not get enough of it in their diet. Adding magnesium-rich foods. such as beans, whole wheat bread and many types of fish, is one way to enjoy the benefits of magnesium without taking a supplement. True magnesium deficiencies are rare and usually are the result of an illness that causes a temporary dip in magnesium levels, such as vomiting or diarrhea. People with illnesses such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism and colitis may also develop deficiencies. People with low levels of magnesium, while not technically deficient, may benefit from supplementing magnesium in their diet.
Relieve Symptoms of Depression
Although not an alternative to prescription antidepressants, magnesium supplements can ease many of the symptoms of depression, including anxiety, trouble sleeping and irritation.
Treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Magnesium can ease the mental confusion, irritability and low attention span that is common in those with ADHD. Researchers are not sure if magnesium deficiency causes ADHD or if the magnesium supplementation eases the symptoms, but either way, study results reported by the University of Maryland Medical Center showed an improvement in symptoms when patients added magnesium supplements to the medication they were prescribed.
Contribute to Heart Health
One of the organs most affected by magnesium is the heart. Magnesium is responsible for the contraction and relaxation of muscles, including the heart muscle. People suffering from congestive heart failure and arrhythmia often take magnesium supplements. It is important to discuss the potential benefits of magnesium supplements with your doctor if you have an existing heart condition.
Relieve the Pain of Migraines
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, magnesium levels are often low in people who suffer from migraines. Supplementing magnesium levels in these patients reduced the length of time the migraine lasted as well as the amount of prescription pain medication necessary to relieve their discomfort.
