How to Make Your Own Journal Online

Journaling can be a forgotten art once you surpass teenage years. For many, it is a great way to develop writing skills, strengthen personal communication and relieve stress. Whether you're looking to modernize your existing journal or create a new one, online journaling is a low maintenance way to do it. You can keep it private, or share with friends and family if you choose. There is no right or wrong way to do it; the hardest part is getting started.

Step 1

Choose your method. Some people consider a blog to be an online journal. However, there are also websites that offer online journal templates (see resources below).

Step 2

Find a site you like that is easy to navigate. Common blog sites include Blogger.com and Wordpress.com.

Step 3

Determine your formatting. If you wish to develop a design layout, there are preselected backgrounds and fonts to choose from. However, developing a layout is not required.

Step 4

Determine levels of access. You can make your blog or journal private, where only you can see it, or you can share it with people you select by assigning passwords. If you feel like sharing openly, you can make it public. Remember that if you choose to make it open, you should refrain from using specific names or identifying information as a security precaution.

Step 5

Adapt your approach to the idea that there are no parameters to your journaling. Don't develop rules about what you can and cannot discuss. Your journal is for your personal use. Express yourself freely. Don't choose topics unless you want your journal to serve a specific purpose, such as journaling about frustrations at work to brainstorm problem solving techniques.

Tips and Warnings

  • Write regularly, but don't feel pressured. You should make it a habit to journal regularly, but this doesn't mean that you write every day. Journal when you feel inspired.
