In 1989 the International Triathlon Union (ITU) formed as an athletic organization designed to support triathlon athletes. The triathlon as a competition began in the 1970s with the San Diego Track Club, according to ITU, and by 2000 the sport entered into Olympic-level competition with its debut at the Sydney, Australia games. The standard triathlon consists of a 1500 meter swim, a 40 kilometer bicycle race and a 10 kilometer run. The cost of competing at a national, international or Olympic level can be prohibitive for triathlon athletes and event organizers; fortunately, triathlon grants help highly-competitive candidates to reach peak performance, help event organizers to promote the sport and promote child athletes.

International Triathlon Union Athlete Scholarship

The International Triathlon Union Athlete Scholarship provides scholarship and grant money to highly-competitive triathletes from developing countries with National Federations in the ITU. Recipient of these scholarships and grants must be viewed as possible Olympic contenders by their respective National Federations. The ITU Sport Development Director considers the following criteria when selecting fund recipients: athletes from developing or emerging countries, contenders who placed in the top five at Continental Championship under specific conditions and athletes who placed in the top eight in the Elite category under certain conditions. Athletes and their coaches are eligible for this grant.
