Although making your own baby food may sound like a daunting task, it can be a relatively painless process. It does not require a degree in nutrition, special equipment or an exceptional cooking ability. Because butternut squash is full of beta carotene, fiber and Vitamin A, it is an ideal vegetable to mash into baby food. Besides boosting your baby's immune system, butternut squash can also improve vision and lower the risk of cancer and heart disease.
Step 1
Choose a fresh butternut squash and use it within one or two days. As an alternative, the Babycenter website recommends using frozen squash when fresh isn't available.
Step 2
Clean your hands, equipment, cooking surfaces and the squash thoroughly. The National Network for Child Care explains that this can help prevent the spread of bacteria and illness.
Step 3
Peel and cut the squash into chunks to speed up the cooking process. Boil, steam or bake until it is tender.
Step 4
Strain any seeds through a colander.
Step 5
Mash the squash with a food mill, fork, baby food grinder, or hand blender. The Babycenter website recommends adding a few drops of water, formula or breast milk until you reach the desired consistency.
Tips and Warnings
- Store any leftover baby food in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The Babycenter website suggests pouring left over baby food into an ice cube tray and freezing. When completely frozen, dump the cubes into a plastic storage bag. Butternut squash can be stored this way for approximately eight months. Don't be afraid to add seasoning such as paprika, cumin, rosemary or mild chilies to your homemade baby food. Not only can babies tolerate spices likes these, many actually enjoy the variety of flavors.
- The National Network for Child Care warns that caution must be used when reheating or defrosting baby food in a microwave. Microwaves can sometimes warm food unevenly, creating hot pockets in the baby food. As a result, you could burn your baby's mouth. Be sure to stir any reheated baby food well and allow it to sit for a few minutes before serving it to your baby.
