For those not genetically gifted with a straight set of teeth, braces maybe in your future. However, with advances in cosmetic dentistry, there are numerous options in orthodontic braces.
Metal Braces
Metal braces are the traditional orthodontic treatment. Giving you a mouth full of metal, treatment can take between a year to 5 years or more, depending on the patient. For those with severe dental problems, such as bridge and crown work and jaw discrepancies, metal braces may be the only option you have in straightening your teeth.
Invisalign
Invisalign is exactly what it sounds like: invisible. According to Align Technology, the company began Invisalign in 1999 and pioneered the system of clear aligner therapy. The treatment consists of a series of nearly invisible aligners that fit directly over your teeth. They are switched out approximately every 2 weeks. Each aligner is individually manufactured; everything is custom made.
Clarity braces
For those not desiring a traditional metal mouth, an alternative is available on the market: clarity braces. They are clear, ceramic brackets that will straighten teeth but cannot be seen. They are, however, larger than traditional metal braces and will add a few more months to your orthodontic treatment. Many adults choose this route, as the braces blend in with the color of your teeth.
SmartClip braces
SmartClip braces are relatively new in cosmetic dentistry. They have small metal clips built into the brackets to secure the wire, so no elastic bands are needed. They require fewer visits to the orthodontist and a shorter treatment. Some patients will only have to wear them one-third of the time they would have to wear traditional braces. Speak with your orthodontist to find out if you are a candidate for this type of treatment.
