When heat is overused on your hair, it can cause damage. According to Kids Health, humans heads contain approximately 100,000 hairs. Each piece of hair has three layers. The outside layer or cuticle protects the inner two layers. When your hair is healthy, the cuticle layers are flat and reflect the light. When too much heat is applied to your hair, the scales separate and do not protect the inner two layers of each hair shaft. This damage can cause the hair to break, look dull and be dry. Heat-free hairstyles can give your hair a break and help prevent damage.
Braids
Braiding your hair will give you natural wave without a curling iron. When your hair is damp, apply some hairspray or styling cream and separate your hair in the middle of your head. Braid each piece of hair and secure with a hair tie. When your hair is dry, take out the braids and comb through with your fingers. This hairstyle works well on all hair types.
Wavy
Make the most of your naturally wavy hair by adding a scrunching mousse to towel-dried hair. Tilt your head to the side and scrunch your hair with your fingers from the ends up. Let your hair air dry. This hairstyle works well with wavy and curly hair.
Finger Curls
Give your hair curl by using your fingers as a curling iron. When your hair is damp, apply some styling cream or a little bit of conditioner. Twirl sections of your hair around your fingers one by one. The direction you twist your hair will determine how your curl turns out. Let your hair air dry and spray with a little hairspray to keep the curl. This hairstyle works well on straight or wavy hair.
French Twist
This hairstyle gives your hair volume and sophistication. While your hair is damp, apply volumizing mousse. Let your hair air dry. When your hair is dry, flip your hair over and backcomb it from tip to root. Flip your hair back over and gather all of it in one hand. Twist your hair upwards and secure the ends with bobby pins. Spray your hair with hairspray to hold the style.
