Volleyball is a game that requires accurate timing on jumps, quick player reactions and a great deal of focus. The goal is to turn good defense into an offensive striking opportunity during every possession. A common technique used during the game is called a "set." During a set, a player assists in another player's striking attempt. Single and team drills can help players become better prepared for situations which can require sets, strikes and passes.

Toss to the Setter

Step 1

Instruct one player, called the setter, to stand in the middle of the court and two more, called shaggers, to take position behind and in front of the setter.

Step 2

Toss balls toward the setter. Toss some high, some low, some fast, some slow--the idea is to make her adjust.

Step 3

Instruct the setter to set the ball right in front of either shagger. This drill imitates a game situation in which the setter is forced to adjust and make a clean set to a teammate.

Watching the Coach

Step 1

Instruct the setter take position in the center of one side of the court. Have another player stand on the other side of the net, ready to toss balls toward the setter. The coach stands 8 to 10 feet to the side of the tosser.

Step 2

Point to a location on the setter's side of the court for the tosser to lob the ball. The setter will have to react to the ball but also watch the coach, who will be signaling for the next ball's location. As the setter improves, he will learn to use his peripheral vision to anticipate the location of the lob.

Step 3

Rotate each player to the setting position to continue the drill.

Set With Sideways Walk

Step 1

Instruct two players to stand on a sideline on opposite sides of the net and 3 to 4 feet back from it. One player starts with the ball.

Step 2

Instruct the player with the ball to set the ball over the net to the other player and take one step sideways into the court.

Step 3

Tell the players to continue to sidestep along the net while they set the ball to each other all the way across the court.
