Hemorrhoids are veins in the anal area that become swollen and irritated. External hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids that are located outside of the anus itself. External hemorrhoids can be painful and itchy, especially after straining to produce a bowel movement. Self-care measures can be taken to help relieve the pain caused by external hemorrhoids.
Warm Soak
Soaking in a warm bathtub may reduce the inflammation of external hemorrhoids, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC). Use clear water only, without soap, and soak for at least 10 minutes to relieve discomfort.
Corticosteroids
Corticosteroid creams can reduce inflammation and provide some pain relief. Creams and ointments appropriate for use on external hemorrhoids are available over the counter in most drugstores.
Witch Hazel
Witch hazel is a natural remedy for external hemorrhoids and may ease pain and itching symptoms. Apply witch hazel to the hemorrhoids with a cotton ball or pad.
Anesthetics
Anesthetic creams used topically on external hemorrhoids can reduce pain. Most creams of this kind contain lidocaine.
Hemorrhoidectomy
Surgically repairing external hemorrhoids that become thrombosed, or filled with blood clots, can eliminate the pain. During a hemorrhoidectomy, blood clots may be drained or the entire hemorrhoid may be removed.
