Ringworm, also called Tinea corporis, is a fungal disorder of the skin characterized by the red or pink circular rash that appears. Despite the name, ringworm is not associated to a parasite or worm infestation. Ringworm is commonly linked with athlete's foot and jock itch, two other fungal skin disorders. Ringworm is contagious and can spread to humans from animals, objects, soil and other infected humans. Ringworm is commonly treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams; however, alternative home remedies are available.
Step 1
Apply papaya paste to the infected area. Grind dried papaya seeds with water to create a paste. Rub onto patches of ringworm throughout the day.
Step 2
Mix dried mustard seeds with a small amount of water. Mash into a thick paste. Apply to affected skin.
Step 3
Add a small amount of tea tree oil to a cotton ball. Wipe the infected area two to three times daily. Always use a clean cotton ball before reapplying the oil to avoid spreading the fungus and contaminating the oil's container.
Step 4
Crush a clove of garlic into a paste. Apply the garlic and juices directly to the infection. Garlic has natural antifungal properties that will decrease the symptoms of ringworm.
Step 5
Cut open one lemon and sprinkle with salt. Rub the lemon onto the ringworm area. Add additional salt as necessary. The lemon and salt will exfoliate and dry the skin, removing the ringworm.
Tips and Warnings
- The ring associated with ringworm is not always present---a general rash or raised red area can also indicate there is a fungal infection. Ringworm takes 1 to 2 weeks to treat. Visit a medical professional if treatment is not working. Herbal and alternative remedies are effective, but treatment will take longer than over-the-counter or prescription medications.
- Remember that ringworm is highly contagious; disinfect items that have touched the skin daily, such as bedding and clothing. Avoid allowing others to touch the skin.
