You will need a humidor humidifier if you plan to keep your cigars for longer than one to two weeks, notes Neptune Cigars. Cigars should not be stored in temperatures below 73 degrees F and should be kept at approximately 70 percent humidity. You can buy humidors at retail or online smoke shops. Your humidor should be kept in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Very hot conditions put the cigars at risk of a worm infestation known as lacioderma.
Step 1
Set the black humidifier piece in a tub of distilled water. Keep it submerged until it is well saturated. Place it on a towel to let excess water drip off.
Step 2
Wipe down the inside of the humidor with a cloth dampened with distilled water. Place a plastic bag on the base of the humidor once you are through wiping it down.
Step 3
Place a damp sponge on top of the plastic bag. Attach the black humidifier and hygrometer to the humidor box. Close the humidor overnight.
Step 4
Calibrate the hygrometer if it is not reading correctly. Hygrometers read relative humidity levels. Put salt into a bottle cap and dampen the salt with a few drops of water, suggests Neptune Cigars. Place the bottle cap in a sealed plastic container. After six hours, take a reading from the hygrometer. If it does not read 75 percent, calibrate it to this number.
Step 5
Add a couple drops of distilled water when the humidity level drops 3 to 4 percentage points.
