A List of Low Calorie Foods

When you are trying to lose weight, you need to create a caloric deficit. This means you are burning more calories than you are taking in. In order to do this, you are going to need a low calorie food list. This will help you make better choices when you prepare meals and when you dine out.

Greens

There are many different types of greens that are used for salads, sautes and side dishes. All of which are high in fiber, vitamins and minerals, and low in calories. Examples of these include baby spinach, radicchio, leaf lettuce, mache, arugula, iceberg lettuce, kale, collards and mustard greens. Various types of sprouts are also low in calories such as alfalfa, broccoli, sunflower and bean sprouts.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are not considered a vegetable or plant. They are considered a "fungi." Regardless of what they are or where they come from, they are low in calories. As an added bonus, they can also help boost your immunity.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables are high in fiber and they also have "glucosinolates" in them. These are sulfur-containing compounds that can lower your risk of developing certain types of cancer. If that's not good enough, these vegetables are also low in calories. Examples include cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, bok choy and rutabagas.

Vegetables

There are a lot of other vegetables that are high in water content and low in calories. Examples of these include celery, cucumbers, carrots, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, jicama and onions.

Fruits

On the average, all fruits are low in calories. Individual pieces and servings of fruit are usually just over 100 calories or less. Some examples of the lowest calorie fruits include starfruit, strawberries, papaya, apricots, watermelon, cantaloupe, lemons and plums.

Snacks

Popcorn is a traditional favorite snack that is enjoyed at the movies and at parties. When it is made the old fashioned way in an air-popper, it is a low calorie food. Another low calorie snack is rice cakes. These are generally 35 calories or less.

Condiments

Condiments such as soy sauce, ketchup, mustard, salsa and barbecue sauce are all low in calories. The only thing you need to watch out for is the amount of sodium they have. Pickles and relish are two other low calorie foods.

Reduced Fat

There are many different foods that have had their fat reduced or eliminated, which makes them lower in calories. Examples of these include milk, yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, lunch meats and bread. Egg whites are also low in calories.
