Health care information systems replace medical history paper trails with electronic data. Written medical documents require storage, as well as time and money to transfer the information from one medical setting to another. When all your medical data is stored electronically in one database, your health care providers can access this data and learn about your entire medical history instantly.

Implementation

Successful implementation of health care information systems is contingent on two factors, according to Institute of Health Policy and Management at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The recommendations, published in the December 2001 issue of the "Internal Journal of Medical Informatics" say the organization must allow the new technology to transform its procedures and policies. Second, this organizational transformation must be give sufficient top-down support from central management.

Security

The security of health care information systems is an important issue, according to a paper provided by the Rand Afrikaans University Department of Computer Science in Auckland Park, South Africa, because the compromised data would reveal extremely sensitive and personal information about patients. The paper, published in the April 1999 issue of the "International Journal of Medical Informatics" says the system must balance the need of a privacy guarantee for the patient with ease of access for health providers.

Data Mining

Health care information systems allow the tabulation of anonymous statistics. Known as data mining, this process results in knowledge discovery by exposing previously unknown patterns from large data sets. The numbers these statistics produce can provide new information about the cause of disease and the effect of treatment as well as direct budgetary needs more efficiently. First the data is acquired, prepared and cleaned. Next it's visualized as charts, diagrams and graphs. According to Margaret R. Kraft, the Decision Support Clinical Coordinator, VA Hines Hospital, the data cleaning and preparation uses up 80 percent of the time spent on a data mining project.

Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society boasts 40 regional chapters, 10 interest groups and more than 12,000 members working in health care organizations throughout the world. Career

A career as health care information systems manager starts with a bachelor's degree in the subject. This field of study blends business, information and health care management expertise, according to information provided by Franklin University. It allows you to integrate the management of health information throughout the entire organization.
