Nicotine is a chemical substance found in tobacco products. According to Discovery Health, nicotine is a naturally occurring alkaline stimulant. While the affects of nicotine are initially stimulating to the individual, nicotine can become addictive and habit forming. Products that commonly contain nicotine include cigarettes, chewing tobacco and pesticides. Nicotine consumption is responsible for many adverse health issues. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 20.6 percent of all adults 18 years of age and older smoke cigarettes.

Lung and Respiratory Problems

Nicotine can cause the functioning of the respiratory system to become compromised. Problems and complications associated with nicotine consumption include asthma exacerbation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema. These conditions are caused not only by the consumption of nicotine but also by the method of consumption, namely smoking and inhalation.

Cardiovascular Problems

Cardiovascular complications are not often thought of when considering the dangers of nicotine abuse. According to the American Heart Association, nicotine can cause an increase in blood flow, blood pressure and constriction of the arteries. These changes reduce the amount of oxygen being carried in the blood to the organs within the body. Nicotine can also damage the arteries which may increase likelihood of heart attack in individuals consuming the substance.

Cancer

In addition to lung cancer, which is often associated with smoking and nicotine ingestion, nicotine significantly raises the risk of developing a wide range of cancerous growths in the body. Those abusing nicotine are at risk of developing cancer located in the mouth, throat and esophagus. In addition, nicotine abuse can increase risk of cancers occurring elsewhere in the body including but not limited to the cervix and abdomen.

Nicotine Poisoning and Other Information

Nicotine alone ingested in extreme quantities can cause toxicity. Some signs of toxicity include nausea, vomiting and even seizure activity. It is important to seek emergency care if nicotine toxicity is suspected. In addition, nicotine abuse can be responsible for a variety of other health concerns including infertility, insulin resistance and miscarriage.
