For golfers who like to practice their game in their backyard, basement or garage, a golf mat is a must so that you can practice on virtually any surface. An artificial surface in your garage or basement will allow you to take a full swing without damaging your clubs, and a golf mat in your yard will help to protect your lawn. Combined with a driving net to collect the balls, a golf mat is a great practice tool for any golfer.
Making Your Own Golf Mat
Step 1
Measure the foam rubber and artificial turf to ensure they are the same size. Be sure to select a dense foam rubber that can withstand the impact of a golf club and protect whatever surface is underneath. An ideal width for foam rubber is somewhere between 3/8 inch and 5/8 inch.
Step 2
Spray the bottom of the artificial turf with the adhesive. Affix the foam rubber to the bottom of the turf. Make sure that whatever spray adhesive you choose is not corrosive and will not disintegrate the rubber or the turf. You may want to allow the adhesive to sit overnight so that the seal is permanent.
Step 3
Set the mat in the place where you want to use it. Stand toward one side of the mat so that you can get an idea of where to place the tees. You should be able to take your natural golf stance.
Step 4
Insert whatever tees you choose to use into one side of the driving mat. If you cannot pierce the turf and rubber with the tip of the tee, make a small hole with a drill in the mat so that the tee can stand up straight. Wood tees will give you a more natural swing and won't damage your clubs but will have to be replaced quite often. Rubber tees are much more durable but play a little differently than wood tees.
Step 5
Place a ball on the tee and take a normal swing. Be sure you have a golf net set up or have plenty of space so that your ball will not cause any damage.
Tips and Warnings
- Put the golf mat in an area where you will be able to take a full swing. Watch for lightbulbs and rafters if you are indoors, and watch for tree branches and electrical wires if you are outdoors.
