Lakes are popular destination spots in Dallas, Texas, throughout the hot summer months. The Dallas area has many lakes that are well-suited for fishing, boating or swimming. These lakes often have public boat ramps and public parks where you can drop off you car and spend the day on the water.
Lakes in the Dallas Area
Lake Ray Hubbard is located in Dallas County outside of Rockwall, Texas. Ray Hubbard is a large lake, at 21,671 acres. Joe Pool Lake, located outside of Grand Prairie in Dallas County is smaller in size than Lake Ray Hubbard, with a surface area of 6,469 acres, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife. The Army Corps of Engineers designed and manage Lake Lavon in Dallas.
Boating
Boating is a popular pastime in Joe Pool Lake. The Joe Pool Marina has a two-lane boat ramp with boat gas and a parking area. There are also boat ramps inside Cedar Hill State Park, Loyd Park and Britton Park, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife. Lake Lavon has several free boat ramps located around the lake and two public marinas, the Collin Park Marina and East Fork Harbor marina.
Fishing
Lake Ray Hubbard is good for both bank and boat fishing. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, Hybrid striped bass and blue catfish are the most abundant sport fish in the lake, but anglers can also catch white bass and channel catfish. When fishing in Joe Pool Lake, anglers can expect to find largemouth bass, white bass and white crappie.
Swimming
Mallard Park has a public swimming beach and restrooms with showers. Pebble Beach Park, East Fork Park, Ticky Creek Park and Avalon Park also have public swimming beaches. There are no lifeguards on duty at any of the beaches along Lake Lavon.
Warnings
Severe droughts throughout the summer months in north Texas may cause low water levels in Dallas lakes. These levels can affect the use of boat ramps and public beaches. Also, the state of Texas requires a recreational fishing license for anyone fishing in a lake in Dallas.
