Overview

Achieving the perfect close shave is what most men attempt every morning. Removing facial hair and avoiding cuts, bumps and red marks can be difficult---even for men who have been shaving for years. Follow the below steps for the best way to shave.

Step 1

Wet the facial area using a warm washcloth. Soften any visible beard hair by pressing a washcloth to the face for several seconds. A second option is to shave in the shower to decrease risk of bumps and ingrown hairs. Allow warm water and steam to open pores by waiting five minutes before shaving.

Step 2

Put a small amount of shaving cream in a shaving brush. Use a shaving brush made of badger hair to apply the cream---make sure the brush has been rinsed in hot water before dipping it in the shaving cream. Swirl the brush against the face, applying a medium opaque layer of shaving cream. Set the brush aside.

Step 3

Use a sharp blade and stroke the skin in the direction of the hair growth, commonly up and down. Do not shave in the opposite direction as ingrown hairs and infection may occur. Take your time shaving the hair to avoid cuts and nicks. Avoid using disposable razors and opt for a razor that allows its cartridge to be changed.

Step 4

Wash face with cold water to close pores. Pat the face dry with a clean towel. Apply a facial lotion to lock in moisture. Rinse the shaving brush and store it standing on its handle.

Tips and Warnings

  • A double edged safety razor is ideal.
  • Do not press down on the razor as you shave.
