New moms must remember that it took you nine months to gain weight during pregnancy, so it won't fall off overnight. But you can lose the baby weight with some discipline and exercise.

Weight Lost At Delivery

Losing the baby weight starts right after giving birth. According to the website American Pregnancy, new moms lose 7 lbs. to 8 lbs. baby weight, 4 lbs. maternal blood, 2 lbs. amniotic fluid, 2 lbs. from the uterus and 1 lb. to 2 lbs. from the placenta. About 13 lbs. are lost at delivery. The delivery weight loss helps new moms get a jump-start on their goal of losing weight.

Time Frame

A realistic time frame is important to understand when trying to lose the baby weight. An average of 25 lbs. to 37 lbs. are gained during pregnancy, according to the American Pregnancy website. Losing an average of 2 lbs. a week is a healthy range for weight loss. Calculating how much weight you want to lose and hoping for a 2-lb. weight loss can help you set a time frame to reach your goal weight.

Potential

There is potential for weight loss to be easy after delivery. A balanced diet contributes to weight loss. Right after giving birth, new moms can watch their diet by monitoring portion control and choosing healthy foods. Foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean meats help keep you full longer and fuel your body with the energy it needs to take care of your baby. If you're still having pregnancy cravings it's all right to indulge--but watch the portions so you don't overeat.

Theories

Many theories have been created about whether new moms should begin exercise after giving birth. According to the Mayo Clinic, if you were exercising while pregnant and had a smooth delivery, it's all right to start exercising again just days after your delivery. However, if you had a cesarean section or a complicated birth, it's best to talk to your doctor. Most of all, listen to your body and decide what feels right for you as far as fitness. Aerobic activity can help shed the baby fat.

Considerations

Losing weight after birth doesn't have to be hard. Understand that it takes some time, and talk to your doctor about what changes in your body to expect. Consider how your body feels each day and adjust your caloric intake and exercise to your body's needs. Don't jeopardize your health in order to reach your goal faster.
