Getting married is an exciting time for most people. It can also be a busy time--not only do you have to plan the details of your wedding, but you may also move into a new home or apartment with your spouse. There are also other tasks to attend to, such as getting a new driver's license, opening a new checking account, and providing new contact information to credit card companies and other creditors. After you get married, you will need a new Social Security card with your new name. Failing to provide the Social Security Administration with your new name may delay tax refunds and cause other problems, according to the Social Security Administration website.
Step 1
Print form SS-5, which is available on the Social Security Administration website, and complete this form. Write all information in ink--the Social Security Administration may not accept a document completed in pencil or other erasable media.
Step 2
Visit your local Social Security office. A list of locations is available on the Social Security Administration website.
Step 3
Provide the representative with the completed form SS-5, as well as your marriage certificate and photo identification showing your old name, such as a driver's license. The Social Security office may not accept photocopies of these documents, so bring the originals.
Tips and Warnings
- To obtain a new Social Security card with your married name, there is no charge. Avoid providing payment to anyone who attempts to charge you for this service, and report the incident to the Office of the Inspector General. The telephone number of this office is available on the Social Security Administration website.
