What Are the Dangers of a Chicken Pox Shot?

Chicken pox is an illness resulting from the Varicella virus. This virus typically affects children and causes a fever and the appearance of multiple, red and itchy spots on the body. Varicella is also responsible for shingles, which is the result of the virus becoming reactivated. A vaccine is available for Varicella; this vaccine may cause certain side effects.

Localized Reaction

The most common side effects accompanying a vaccine for chicken pox involve the area where the shot is given, according to the Immunization Action Coalition. These symptoms include mild swelling, redness, itching or pain around the injection site. These symptoms are the result of the immune system reacting with the vaccine. This side effect is common. The Immunization Action Coalition reports these symptoms occur in 19 percent of children and 24 percent of adolescents and adults who are given the shot.

Fever

A mild fever may also occur after a Varicella vaccine is given, according to BabyCenter. This fever is typically mild and occurs in approximately 10 percent of all patients who receive the vaccine.

Rash

A mild rash may occur; this rash is generally mild and can occur anywhere on the body. This rash resembles that of the chicken pox rash itself, BabyCenter explains. However, the rash from the vaccine is more limited, only affecting a small portion of the body.

Seizures

Seizures may occur in patients after receiving the Varicella shot, EMedTV reports. These seizures only occur in patients who develop a fever after receiving the vaccine, and fewer than one of every 1000 patients who receive the vaccine are affected. Symptoms of a febrile seizure include sudden muscle jerking or involuntary staring.

Pneumonia

The most serious danger in getting a chicken pox shot is pneumonia, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. This is a relatively rare complication, but it can be life threatening in some children.
