Las Vegas is known for its gambling and drinking, but in fact it offers activities for everyone year round. New York City is always a big draw for New Year's Eve, but Las Vegas features fun, engaging activities to ring in the new year as well. Parties and nightclubs are an obvious option, but look more closely and you'll see the other ideas.

Fireworks

The main New Year's attraction in Las Vegas is the fireworks display above the Strip. At midnight, a fireworks show begins, in tune with music. The show can be seen all over the city--from the street, rooftops, hotel balconies, parks or people's homes. Choose your spot early, as the streets and clubs will become incredibly crowded by late afternoon and early evening. Fireworks are fun for the whole family, but caution should be taken if you choose to bring kids out with you. The best suggestion is to keep them in the hotel or resort to watch the fireworks.

Catch a Show

Las Vegas has many show specials to entertain the crowds on New Year's. The MGM Grand, the Venetian and Caesar's Palace all have features such as Celine Dion and David Copperfield shows on this special night. Shows may be booked well in advance, but they can be positive alternatives to drinking large amounts of alcohol and hanging out in clubs.

Dancing

You'll see dancing offered all over the city, but Fremont Street is especially popular. The streets will be crowded and you will have to pay to party, but the atmosphere is festive and bright.

Relaxing Evening

For a more relaxing or romantic evening, enjoy a dinner out at a fancy restaurant, a few drinks at the bar, and then turn in early to watch fireworks from your hotel windows or balcony. Many hotels will also have parties themselves that, as a guest, you should be able to join. This is a great option because when you are tired after a night of dancing and celebrating, your room isn't too far away.

Warnings

Any club, restaurant or hotel is going to be expensive on New Year's Eve--some can be more than three times their normal cost. Cover charges, drinks and admission fees will also be costly, so be prepared to spend some cash. Also, most activities are better suited to an older crowd, so be age-sensitive when putting together an entourage or a party. Reservations should be made well in advance of the holiday because places will fill up fast. One last consideration is that the farther you stray from your hotel or place of rest during the celebrating, the harder it will be, and the longer it will take, to get back at the end of the night.
