Your obliques, sometimes called love handles, are the abdominal muscles on the side of your midsection. The key to toning your body is creating a balance between fat and muscle. Although this is decidedly one of the hardest areas to see results, you can lose your love handles by taking a broad approach to health and exercise.
Step 1
Eat a diet that is balanced with lean protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Limit the amount of fat you eat by avoiding fried foods or foods with high fat contents.
Step 2
Do cardio exercise three to four times per week for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. In order to tone the muscles in your abdominal area, you have to eliminate the fat on and around your stomach. Otherwise, you may be toning muscles that are hidden behind a layer of fat. Cardiovascular exercises help to burn the extra fat.
Step 3
Do a strength training routine that includes a component targeted at your obliques, three times per week. Lifting free weights or using the weight resistance machines in a gym are good options. Alternate forms of exercise such as pilates or yoga are also effective in toning obliques.
Step 4
Drink plenty of water. It is recommended that you drink eight 8 ounce glasses per day (64 ounces total or approximately 2 liters). Try to drink an additional four glasses per day (or an additional liter).
