Install oversized golf club grips onto your golf clubs if you were having difficulty with hooking your golf ball. Larger grips help delay the wrist in releasing the ball through impact. You should also replace your golf club grips once in the season or whenever they lose their tackiness. The golf club grips age and become brittle over time, creating a flawed swing. Keeping new grips on your golf clubs can help you continue to improve your game.
Step 1
Remove original grips by slicing along the length of the grips with a hook-bladed utility knife. Peel the old grips from the club shaft and discard. Pour grip solvent onto a cloth and clean any residue from the shaft.
Step 2
Insert the golf club shaft into a rubber vise clamp and install the clamp into a vise. Gently tighten the vise until the shaft cannot rotate.
Step 3
Measure the length of the oversized grips and mark the measurement onto the club shaft. Cut two pieces of 2-inch wide grip tape the same length as your oversized grips and place the tape onto the shaft lengthwise. Slip the oversized grips onto the shaft before you remove the backing from the tape to determine if you need to build up the thickness of the shaft with additional grip tape. If the grip fits snug, it does not require additional grip tape. A loose fitting grip needs additional grip tape to fit properly.
Step 4
Build up the thickness of the shaft, if necessary, by spiral wrapping 3/4-inch grip tape around the 2-inch grip tape. Make sure you remove the backing from the 2-inch grip tape before wrapping the additional tape around the shaft. Remove the backing from the additional grip tape.
Step 5
Place a shallow container beneath the shaft. Plug the vent hole in the butt of the over-sized shaft with a golf tee and pour grip solvent into the grip. Plug the opening of the grip with your finger and shake the grip to coat the interior of the grip with the solvent. Pour the excess solvent from the grip over the grip tape on the shaft.
Step 6
Pour additional grip solvent over the grip tape to thoroughly saturate the tape. Remove the tee from the oversized grip and quickly but carefully slide the grip onto the shaft. Push the butt of the grip against the butt of the shaft and make sure the alignment markings on the grip line up square with the club head.
Step 7
Remove the shaft from the vise and allow the grip to dry overnight.
