Ski bags prevent snow skis from becoming scratched, dinged or otherwise damaged during transport by car, plane, train, bus or on foot. Pack one or two pair of skis together. Clothing or ski boots can also be added to redistribute weight from other bags when there is a limit on checked baggage with airlines or buses. Some models have extra compartments specially designed to fit ski poles and ski boots as well.

Step 1

Place the ski bag on a flat surface and open the main ski bag compartment. Remove the ski boot bag if one is included. Remove any useful articles inside. Pick up the bag and shake out any loose debris or dirt over the trash can.

Step 2

Wipe down the ski poles with a lint-free cloth. When there is a center divider in the bag resembling a tube, put the poles in it, handles together. For two pair of poles, lay them in opposite directions. When there is no center divider, set the poles aside momentarily.

Step 3

Wipe down ski tips and tops with a lint-free cloth. Remove any dirt or debris that could come loose in the ski bag.

Step 4

Hold the skis flat sides together, tips up, bottoms on the ground. Starting just above the ground with the short side of the towel on the skis, gently wrap the towel around the skis in an upward spiral. Add a second towel if needed to cover the entire length of the skis.

Step 5

Insert the skis into the bag, first one end, then the other. When there is a ski pole compartment, lay the skis to one side of the center divider.

Step 6

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 when there is a second set of skis to pack in the bag, setting them on the other side of the center divider. When there is no center divider, insert the skis next to the first set with the tips facing in the opposite direction. Set the ski poles on top of the skis when there is no center divider. Lay two pair in opposite directions.

Step 7

Shake out the ski boot bag, if one is available. Insert the boots into the boot bag and fasten it shut. Insert the boot bag into the ski bag where it belongs according to the manufacturer's directions.

Step 8

Fill the bag pockets with accessories, such as ski wax, gloves, goggles, a small towel, a wax scraper or a hat.

Step 9

Zip shut all bag compartments.

Step 10

Wrap any compression straps horizontally around the ski bag to minimize the amount of space used. Secure them with a buckle or hook and loop fastener.

Step 11

Affix a nametag to the bag handle.

Tips and Warnings

  • When your ski bag is out of site for some time, use a small lock to prevent others from unzipping it. Refer to airport, train or bus station protocol for lock guidelines Choose a ski bag with two types of carrying straps when wheel use is impractical. A single strap over the shoulder will free up the hands for other items. Two short handles bundled into one strap are useful when there are few items to carry. A ski boot bag is often found at one end of the ski bag interior.
