Acne is a skin condition that is caused when pores become clogged. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, each pore is connected to a hair follicle. When the follicle produces excess oil, it can become blocked, and bacteria begins to build. The inflammation in the blockage then forms as a whitehead, blackhead or cyst. Acne tends to run in families and can be caused by hormones, stress or high levels of humidity and sweating. Alternative treatments for acne do exist and are easy to do. If your acne is severe, it may be necessary to contact a dermatologist.

Tea Tree Oil

Step 1

Wash your face gently with a mild cleanser. Be careful not to touch or pick at your pimples, as this can aggravate your skin and cause more acne to spread.

Step 2

Pat your skin dry with a clean washcloth. Take a cotton swab and apply tea tree oil to each pimple.

Step 3

Allow the tea tree oil to sit on your face for 10 to 20 minutes. Wash it off gently with a little bit of warm water. Apply your favorite oil-free moisturizer.

Brewer's Yeast

Step 1

Wash your face gently with a mild cleanser. Allow your face to remain a bit damp.

Step 2

Take a pinch of brewer's yeast, and apply it to each pimple.

Step 3

Let it stay on your skin for 10 to 20 minutes.

Step 4

Rinse off the yeast with a small amount of warm water. Apply your favorite moisturizer.

Tips and Warnings

  • MayoClinic.com suggests both tea tree oil and brewer's yeast as alternative treatments for acne. It also suggests taking zinc supplements. It is important not to over wash your face; do not wash it more than twice a day. Wash with a gentle, mild cleanser, especially after you exercise. Keep your hair out of your face, especially if it is oily. Avoid greasy creams or moisturizers as these can cause acne. Seek out water-based formulas instead. Remember to take care of your nutritional levels, and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Get adequate rest at night, and keep your stress levels low to prevent acne.
  • If your acne still persists after trying alternative treatments, you may want to see a dermatologist. They can prescribe topical or oral medication.
