What Are Dental Lumineers?

For those who suffer from chipped, cracked teeth or uneven pearly whites, Lumineers is an alternative to braces that is both inexpensive and a quick fix. But you need to consider all the benefits and challenges before committing to cosmetic dentistry.

Lumineers is a brand name of the Den-Mat Corp. They are very similar to veneers, but are exceptionally thinner. For this reason, the teeth do not have to be ground down, and no drilling is necessary. They are just a small translucent porcelain glued directly over your tooth to give you a straight, beautiful smile.

Cost

The cost of Lumineers ranges depending on each individual, but typically go from $700 to $1,100 per Lumineer, as of August 2009. However, they do not last a lifetime and will need to be replaced, usually around the 20-year point. This is, however, cheaper than the cost of a traditional veneer, which runs between $700 to $2,000 per tooth.

Warnings

Although cheaper and thinner, it is not always possible to use Lumineers. Many dentists shy away from using Lumineers on teeth that are not as easily accessed or may not end up with a perfect result, according to Dr. David Hall of Infinity Dental Web.

Considerations

Also according to Hall, because Lumineers do not require treating the teeth beforehand by shaving off the tooth enamel, there will be a small bump. This can lead to staining, gum irritation and possibly tooth decay. If you are considering Lumineers, be sure to bring up these issues with your dentist before leaping into this.

Are Lumineers Right For Me?

If you suffer from stained, chipped, cracked or uneven teeth, Lumineers are an option to consider. The product can be used to correct these dental issues with as few as two office visits. It is a much quicker and less expensive option than wearing braces for months, even years, according to Drs. H.E. Strassler and S. Weiner of the University of Maryland Dental School.
