Creating your own baseball field and bases may require ingenuity, as regulation equipment may not be around. You'll need a suitable area to create the field. Regulation fields are a combination of dirt and turf, although any open area can be pressed into service to play recreational baseball. Keep in mind differences in regulations between leagues when creating the bases, especially if you want to play officially sanctioned games.
Step 1
Place home plate so that it faces the open area, as this spot determines the alignment of the rest of the field. Mark home with a cone, plastic disc or official home plate.
Step 2
Measure the distance from home plate to the pitcher's mound and mark the spot with a cone, disc or official mound plate. Follow league rules; for example, the distance from home base to the pitcher's mound for 12 year olds and under is 46 feet and 13 year olds and up is 60 feet and 6 inches.
Step 3
Measure 127 feet, 3 3/8 inches from home base to second base; this distance may be shorter for youth leagues. Place a disc, cone or official mound at this location.
Step 4
Measure 90 feet away from home and second base, to the right side of the field, until the two measuring devices intersect forming a 90-degree angle, to locate first base. Alter your measurements for leagues with shorter baselines and your measurements.
Step 5
Locate third base by performing the same procedure for first base on the left side of home and second base.
Step 6
Draw yarn from the back corner of home plate to the right corner of first, to the center of second base, the left corner of third and to the back corner of home. Stake it into place. Paint over the yarn to set up the baselines.
Tips and Warnings
- You may need to improvise with homemade bases, a pitcher's mound and home plate by substituting regulation models with cones or rubber discs to mark them for play.
- A common mistake is so locate second base at the corner of the first and third baseline; however, it should be at the center of their intersection.
