Skin cancer--especially the basal cell and squamous cell varieties--is the most common cancer in the United States, says MedlinePlus. Another form, known as melanoma, is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, but it is less common. Both basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancers are widely attributed to over-exposure to the sun. Skin cancer is highly treatable if caught early, notes the American Cancer Society. Skin cancer is usually treated with radiation therapy or surgery, but alternative medicine can be used alongside conventional treatments to help alleviate symptoms.
Herbs
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, herbs may be helpful in the treatment of skin cancer. However, because no scientific studies prove the efficacy of herbs as a skin cancer treatment, a patient should never rely on herbal treatments alone. An example of a herb used to support cancer treatment is green tea. UMMC notes that green tea is rich in antioxidants that protect cell membranes from being damaged by free radicals. Other herbs with skin-protective effects include ginkgo, milk thistle and hawthorn.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy, a complementary medicine, is based on the premise that "like cures like"; it was discovered by a German physician in the 1800s. This alternative treatment may complement traditional medicine to alleviate symptoms of skin cancer and skin cancer treatments, although no scientific evidence suggests it can actually treat the cancer. A homeopathic doctor will choose the most appropriate remedy based on an extensive consultation with the patient. According to the Society of Homeopaths, it is safe to take homeopathic remedies alongside traditional treatments as they will not interact with conventional medicines.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture can help relieve cancer-related symptoms and side effects of cancer treatments, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. During an acupuncture session, a qualified acupuncturist will insert very fine needles into invisible energy channels called meridians. This has the effect of releasing the body's healing energy, known as "qi." According to UMMC, a qi deficiency is often detected in the spleen or kidney meridians of cancer patients. Acupuncture may be used after conventional cancer treatment has been completed or alongside active medical treatment.
