Having a treadmill at home is a convenient way to work out. You will have to perform some maintenance tasks on your treadmill to keep it running properly. Cleaning, lubricating and adjusting the tension of your walking belt can all be done relatively quickly and with minimal tools. Replacing the treadmill belt is a little more involved but can still be done by most owners. If the walking belt has become frayed or worn, follow these steps to replace it.

Remove the Old Belt

Step 1

Unplug the treadmill.

Step 2

Take off the motor hood. This is the plastic cover at the front of the treadmill. It is usually held in place by three or four screws.

Step 3

Remove the adjustment bolts holding the rear roller in place. Slide the roller out of the walking belt.

Step 4

Remove the front roller adjustment bolt. Count the number of turns it takes to remove the bolt.

Step 5

Remove any remaining screws holding the deck assembly in place.

Step 6

Lift one side of the deck and slide the old belt off. Wax or lubricate the deck as needed.

Install the New Belt

Step 1

Slide the new belt on the same way you took the old belt off. The belt should be installed so the seam runs downward from left to right.

Step 2

Insert the roller bolts. Replace the front roller adjustment bolt, but do not tighten it. Install the deck screws you removed in step 5 above. Slide the rear roller into the new belt. Insert the rear roller bolts, but do not tighten.

Step 3

Tighten the roller bolts. Turn the front roller bolt the same amount of turns you did to remove it. Tighten the rear roller bolts.

Step 4

Lift one side of the walking belt. The belt should lift 3 to 4 inches from the deck. Adjust the rear roller bolts as needed if the belt is too tight or too loose. Always turn both rear roller bolts the same amount.

Step 5

Replace the motor hood.

Tips and Warnings

  • On some treadmills, you will need to remove the side railings to remove the deck assembly. Do this after unplugging the treadmill. Depending on your model, either unscrew the railings or slide them off the end of the treadmill.
