Batting helmets are used by players of all ages and competition levels. Head protection is important to the safety of players in a game where a hard ball is thrown close to hitters and runners, often at high speeds.
Manufacturers
Large, well-known sporting goods manufacturers such as Mizuno, Rawlings, Easton and Worth all make baseball and softball batting helmets in a variety of models.
Models
In 2010, Mizuno offers two lines of helmets: the MVP Fitted Batter's Helmet and the MVP One Size Batter's Helmet. Rawlings manufactures the Coolflo Pro, the Pro Batting Helmet and the S100. Easton's helmet line includes the Natural, the Two Toned Natural and the Stealth Grip. Worth offers the Toxic and the Worth Liberty Batter's Helmet.
Features
Most batting helmets feature foam padding on the inside and some come equipped with cages for face protection or have pre-drilled holes to attach a cage. Mizuno's Fitted Batter's Helmet features removable DryLine padding and Rawlings' S100 protects batters from pitches traveling up to 100 miles per hour. Easton claims its helmets provide the "slimmest profile" and are the most aerodynamic, and Worth's unisex youth helmets are equipped with a pony tail channel.
Cost
In 2010, batting helmets produced by these major manufacturers range in price from the $99.99 S100 to the $24.95 Toxic.
Considerations
When selecting a helmet, ensure it meets the safety requirements of your league. All of the helmets mentioned here are approved by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE). Also consider the level of play and the speed of the pitches from which you will need protection.
