Learning a language requires hard work over an extended period of time. Spelling is an essential building block to reading and writing. At an early age, students begin to learn words, definitions and the rules that apply to correctly spelling those words. Games are an enjoyable way to motivate the students and maintain their interest in learning to spell words.

Spelling Calisthenics

You can teach your students how to spell with this beginner-level game. To begin, draw lines on the chalkboard similar to those on elementary printing paper. Write some of the spelling words on the chalkboard. The students spell the words out loud with you. When a letter in the word goes above the line, the students raise their arms in the air. When the letter has a tail that goes below the line, they touch their toes. When the letter fits within the writing lines, they clap their hands. After the children memorize the words they turn their backs to the chalkboard and spell the words while performing the motions.

Spell and Shoot

Your class will beg you to play this game. To begin, you will need a medium-size ball, a circular trash can and masking tape. You will place masking tape on the floor 5 ft., 10 ft. and 15 ft. away from the trash can. A basket made from the shortest distance is worth 1 point, from the next distance is 2 points and from the farthest distance is 3 points. Divide the students into two teams and call one student from each team to the chalkboard. You will repeat a spelling word. The first player to write the word correctly on the chalkboard gets 1 point and a chance to shoot the ball into the basket from any of the three distances. The team with the most points wins.

Spelling Word Hunt

By playing this game, you can teach your students to memorize spelling words and work as a team. To begin, you will need to create two flashcards for each spelling word. You will set the cards on flat places or tape them to the walls around the room. Divide the students into pairs and give each team a list of the spelling words. Each team circulates the room searching for the words. When they find a word, one student must turn his back to the word and spell it. If spelled correctly he places a check beside the word on the team's list. The second student then turns her back and spells the word. The team cannot move forward until each student has spelled the word correctly. The team to finish first is the winner.
