Preparing a baby's room is a large task for new parents, since it involves decorating, buying furniture and organizing baby clothing and supplies. The key to organizing a baby's room is to start with the essential pieces of furniture and then create areas for diaper changing, nursing and storage. A well-organized baby's room will give you easy access to all of your baby supplies and clothing and have a large amount of storage space without creating clutter.
Step 1
Install shelving 2 to 3 feet underneath the clothing rod in your baby closet to maximize storage, since baby clothes are small and leave space underneath. If you don't already have a rod installed, try installing two rods, one 2 to 3 feet above the other, between tall shelves. You can also install one rod over shelving. Store baby shoes and blankets on the shelves. Buy baskets to slide into the shelves to store toys, extra diapers and other baby supplies.
Step 2
Stock your changing table with everything you need for baby hygiene, including diapers, baby wipes, lotions, powders and changing pad covers. Position a diaper pail and clothes hamper close to the changing table to store dirty diapers and dirty clothing quickly.
Step 3
Create an area for nursing your baby by adding a rocker or glider with an ottoman in a corner of the room. Add a lamp and small side table to place bottles and nursing supplies.
Step 4
Select a crib that has a built-in drawer underneath for extra storage for blankets. If you have a crib with no extra storage space, buy a small storage bin or basket to slide under the crib to create extra space.
Step 5
Buy a toy box to store large toys and dolls. You can use a large wicker basket, toy box bench or even a trunk positioned against a wall to store toys.
Step 6
Buy a dresser or chest, if space permits, to hold extra baby clothing and blankets. As children grow, they need more storage space for clothing.
