Mascara is a cosmetic used to highlight eyelashes. Mascara adds volume, length and thickness to lashes. A variety of colors, from natural browns and blacks to vibrant blues and greens, are available. A common problem associated with mascara is the occasional clumps that form on lashes when the liquid cosmetic is applied. Avoiding lumps is difficult, but not impossible.

Step 1

Curl upper lashes using an eyelash curler. Place the upper lashes onto the rubber wedge on the eyelash curler. Press the curler together and hold lashes in place for about 10 seconds and release. Make sure not to pinch the eyelid. Repeat until desired eyelash curl is reached.

Step 2

Remove the wand or brush from the mascara tube. Wipe off any clumps on the bristles of the brush. Place the middle finger of your free hand on the eyebrow and pull the skin taut.

Step 3

Brush the wand against the underside of the upper eyelashes in a zigzag motion. Move from the outer corner of the eye inward. Do not use a thick amount of mascara. Allow to dry for several minutes. Apply a second light coat.

Step 4

Brush through eyelashes with a small metal eyelash comb once the mascara has dried. The comb will remove clumps and separate lashes to avoid a spider-eye look.

Step 5

If you wish, coat the bottom lashes with mascara.

Tips and Warnings

  • For the look of an elongated lash, apply the second coat of mascara holding the brush vertically. Do not pump the eye lash wand into the tube for extra coating. Pumping adds air to the mascara, drying it out and adding bacteria to the makeup. Simply wiggle the wand in the tube.
