Even if temperatures turn chilly, your little one still needs to get outside and expend excess energy. There's one issue standing in his way--he needs to learn to bundle up in warm clothes that protect him from frostbite and other cold weather conditions. If your child sees winter attire as an annoying restriction, teach him such items are necessary to protect him from the elements. Show him the importance of dressing for cold weather so he can stay warm and safe.
Step 1
Use a home thermometer or a thermometer illustration when you discuss clothing and temperatures with your child. She can benefit from a visual representation when she's learning about weather-appropriate clothing. Talk with her about cold temperatures and explain why she needs to wear certain clothing.
Step 2
Create fun names for necessary cold-weather clothing. Examples could include "toasty toes" or "mighty mittens." Help your child come up with creative terms for his cold-weather gear. Inventive names may increase his eagerness to put on his "mighty mittens" to conquer the snow and ice.
Step 3
Take your child with you when you shop for her winter clothes. Ask for her input on colors and styles so she's more inclined to bundle up before she goes out to play.
Step 4
Lay out clothing choices before your child goes outside. Remind him why he should wear each piece of clothing. Begin with underclothing before moving on to the outer layers, such as mittens and a hat.
Step 5
Create a checklist with your child of clothing she must put on before going outside. Include such items as a T-shirt with long sleeves, a fleece jacket, leggings, waterproof pants, shoes, gloves and a hat. Review this list with her before she goes out to ensure she's dressed appropriately.
