What To Look For

The most important feature to look for in any pair of sunglasses is 99 to 100 percent UV-A and B protection. In addition, sunglasses should protect against harmful high-energy visible (HEV) radiation, or blue light. "Although HEV rays have longer wavelengths (400--500 nm) and lower energy than UV rays, they penetrate deeply into the eye and can cause retinal damage," according to All About Vision editor and ophthalmologist Gary Heiting. For UV protection, the lens color doesn't matter, but for HEV protection, it does. Bronze, copper and reddish-brown sunglasses will block the most blue light. As for frame style, that is really up to you. If you lead an athletic or outdoor lifestyle, you may want to look into a high-performance pair of sunglasses that will withstand any extra stress you place on them. Otherwise, any frames you like will work fine.

Common Pitfalls

The biggest mistake people make in purchasing sunglasses is going with price and not quality. Many cheaper pairs of sunglasses do not offer 100-percent UV-A or B protection and minimal HEV protection. Make sure the label on your sunglasses says they are UV-400 or offer absorption up to 400nm. Check the sunglasses you purchase for sturdiness and flexibility. If your lenses scratch easily or break the first time you drop them, they won't be worth the discounted price.

Where To Buy

Sunglasses can be purchased at discount stores, clothing stores and department stores both, online and offline. Pharmacies are also good places to find sunglasses at a discount. When purchasing online, though, be sure to buy a pair of sunglasses in a style you are familiar with and are sure will look right on you. Also factor any shipping cost into your final tally and look into the store's return policy before buying. The best time to look for new sunglasses is in the middle of the summer and early fall, when the thrill of purchasing summer items has worn off for most shoppers.

Cost

Sunglasses can be purchased at a discount for as little as $5 at a discount store or drugstore. High-end brands like Ray Bans can be found for as little as half of their suggested retail price at stores like Amazon.com. A pair that normally retails for $200 can be found for $120 or less online.
