Breast augmentation involves surgery to insert implants that enlarge the breast. These implants are filled with saline or silicone solutions and may be inserted under or over the chest muscle. After breast augmentation, a bra is necessary to support and protect the breasts during healing without putting pressure on the implants or irritating the incision. A suitable post-augmentation bra must support the breast with soft, stretchy material and contain no underwire.

Post-Augmentation Bra

Post-augmentation bras are available in several forms; these include sports bras and vests. These bras are designed specifically for post-augmentation needs. They are made from soft, stretchy material; they have front closures for easy access; they have no underwire; and they are seamless, which allows you to avoid irritating your incisions. They provide support for your breasts without putting too much pressure on the implants. Swelling will need to subside, and the implants must have enough room to settle into a resting place.

Maternity Bras

Maternity bras are acceptable as post-augmentation bras, because they provide the same benefits as a post-augmentation bra. They use soft and stretchy material, front closures and soft cups, and they provide gentle support without an underwire.

Regular Bras

If your regular bra provides gentle support with soft material that does not press the implant or irritate the incision, you may use it as a post-augmentation bra. If your bra contains underwire, remove the wire before wearing. Have your doctor or nurse assistant approve of the bra before wearing.
